Work Place Immaturity

In my career field, we get a lot of people that are looking for a fresh start. Newcomers come to this field at the age of 40+ years old. So being the young manager doesn't give you much leverage with these old folks that feel life experience is more valuable than actual work experience. I know life experience is valuable, but learning happens at all ages. So why not learn from the guy who's been in the job field longer.

I go on this mini rant because often millennials get criticised for being lazy, self-entitled crybabies. When in my experience, it's quite the opposite. It is mostly the old geezers that feel they are self-entitled to the world. Most millennials I know keep their eyes focused on what they want and work hard for it. Just this week one of our new guys did not show up for his shift. He claims he was not informed when a few days before they told him what time to come in. Instead of asking questions and reassuring himself, he just didn't show up. With his 46 years of life experience, you would think he'd know better. Well, I was wrong. When confronted, instead of taking ownership of his mistake, he just cried, whined, and shot out excuse after excuse. This is only one of many examples where situations like this have occurred with the older generation.

I know not everybody is like this. It is wrong to categorize an entire generation by the flaws of one or 2 people. Which makes me wonder why the media does that to my generation.

  1. Thank you for sharing your reciprocal perspective :-) Yes, it is definitely wrong to categorize an generation, Millennials or Old Geezers, by the flaws of 1 or 2 people. I hope the 46 year old crybaby at your work will grow into an adult someday.

  2. That sounds really disappointing! Well I hope you encounter less situations like that, probably stressful.

  3. I think a lot of the times the younger generation feels attacked is because the media is a lot more prevalent than it was in the older generations days. We take ideas, dissect them, blow them out of proportions and forget about them, all in the span of a few days. This rapid speed makes people confused, and creates a lot of different opinions.

  4. To be honest I understand where you are coming from I am a manager at Domino's and have to deal with the same stuff, stay strong. I get how much effort you put into your work. you wouldn't have the position if you didn't deserve it.

    1. Though I have no knowledge, direct or otherwise, I would venture to say that Adiel earned his manager position at his work place. Stay strong and don't the crybaby's tears stain you :-)

  5. I've grown up a lot and I don't do what the 46 year old does. I hope you get that situation taken care of.

    1. Very introspective Michael :-) Less than twice the age, but I am willing to be that you are twice more mature than the 46 year old crybaby that Adiel has to deal with.

  6. it is so crazy how that new guy made no effort to figure out his shifts, and instead of taking responsible he gave out excuses. In some jobs those actions are not tolerable, so he should feel lucky if he is given a second chance.

  7. Sorry that you had to deal with this. Its crazy how a 46 year old can't follow a simple task to show up at work on time and own up to his mistakes. Hopefully this doesn't happen again!

  8. I could relate to this as well. I'm sorry you have to have to experience the older people looking down upon you. Millennials have more potential than older people think and judging us based on our age does not prove anything. Stay strong and keep representing millennials with the great job you're doing.

  9. Well, it sounds like your job seems stressful when working with an irresponsible adult.
The way you need to look at it is, try to stay focused on the tasks you need to complete because no matter where you go, there's always going to be that one person...

  12. I agree, I am a manager at my job and I often find that I do not get respect from both younger and older colleagues

  13. I think I got lucky with having decent older coworkers, it seems like a lot of us have had bad experiences working alongside those who've been breathing longer. I will say though, my older coworkers tend to be pretty stubborn and only want to do things their way haha

  16. With any job comes its own issues, and sometimes people just aren't mature enough even if they are considered older than you.
